Is It Called Hispanic or Latinx Heritage Month?

Did you know that September 15 - October 15 is National Hispanic Heritage Month?

Now, there’s a lot of complexity around how this month is referred to. Some call it National Hispanic Heritage Month, while others call it Latine/Latinx Heritage Month.

This divide is in many ways generational and also has to do with the ways that TGX+ folks with Spanish and Latin American ancestry are advancing gender inclusion within their respective communities.

TransLash Media has a phenomenal guide that discusses this history and complexity in more detail. In the guide, they share their take on how we can acknowledge the nuances of language while affirming the TGX+ folks that this month is meant to celebrate:

“Latinx and Latine are necessary terms to affirm trans and TGNC [transgender and gender non-conforming] people of Latin-American and Spanish ancestry during the month of September and beyond, which means that it’s valid that National Hispanic Heritage Month and Latinx Heritage Month continue to be used interchangeably. “

In what ways do you use language as a tool for affirming TGX+ folks across intersecting identities? Do you have questions about how to deepen your practice of gender-inclusive language when honoring Heritage Months in your workplace?

Whether it’s one of these questions or something else entirely, you can find answers and learn more by joining our monthly TGX+ Inclusion Roundtable — a free virtual gathering for HR, DEI, and ERG leaders. Check it out and register here!
